# Configure your actions

> Configure the actions on your Zapier MCP server: set field values, choose connections, and control how your agent fills in each field.

Each app on your [Zapier MCP server](/mcp/overview/how-tools-work) has actions that your MCP client can call as tools. You can configure how Zapier runs each of those actions. There are two settings:

* **[Field values](#set-field-values):** Control how each field on an action gets its value. You can set a field to a specific value, let the AI fill it in, or limit the AI to a set of choices. For example, set a Salesforce action so it always assigns new leads to the same owner.
* **[Default connection](#set-the-default-connection):** Choose which [app connection](https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/36818633398157) an app uses when its actions run. For example, set your work Gmail as the default instead of your personal one.

These settings work in both [agentic and managed mode](/mcp/manage/switch-modes).

## Before you begin

* A [Zapier MCP server](/mcp/get-started/quickstart). You must be the [owner](/mcp/manage/server-access) of the server.
* The action you want to configure is already on the server.

## Set field values

Each field on an action has a dropdown that controls how it gets its value. The options that appear depend on the field type.

| Option | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Set a specific value for this field** | Uses the value you enter every time this action runs. Zapier sends that value on every call and ignores any value your MCP client sends. |
| **Have AI generate a value for this field** | Your MCP client fills in the field each time. |
| **Let AI select a value from one of these choices** | Limits your MCP client to a set of options you choose. Available for dropdown fields on write actions only. |
| **Use default** | Uses the default value built into the app. Only appears when the field has a default. |
| **Do not include a value for this field** | Leaves the field empty. Only appears for optional fields with no default. |

To set field values for an action:

1. Go to [mcp.zapier.com](https://mcp.zapier.com) and select your server.
2. Select the ![navApps](https://cdn.zapier.com/storage/photos/b59c6a742ff1197fdea9096bec3b5857.png) **Apps** tab and find the action you want to change.
3. Click the **⋮** menu next to the action and select ![navCog](https://cdn.zapier.com/storage/photos/3451c46a93d480da52444589a8fc84ff.png) **Configure**.
4. For each field, select an option from the dropdown.
5. If the option you selected requires a value, enter it.
6. Click **Save**.

The setting takes effect immediately. Your MCP client does not need to reconnect.

## Set the default connection

You can set one default [app connection](https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/36818633398157) per app on your server. Every action for that app then uses it. You can also override the default for a single action.

### Change the default for an app

1. Click the **⋮** menu next to the **app name** (not the one next to an individual action).
2. Select ![navCog](https://cdn.zapier.com/storage/photos/3451c46a93d480da52444589a8fc84ff.png) **Manage connection**.
3. Select an existing connection from the dropdown, or add a new one.
4. Click **Set default connection**.

> [!TIP]
>
> If your server uses [agentic mode](/mcp/manage/switch-modes), you can also set the default connection by asking your agent in the chat. For example: "Set my work Gmail as the default connection."

### Override the default for a single action

1. Click the **⋮** menu next to the action and select ![navCog](https://cdn.zapier.com/storage/photos/3451c46a93d480da52444589a8fc84ff.png) **Configure**.
2. In the connection dropdown, select a different connection.
3. Click **Save**.

To go back to the app's default, select **Use default** from the connection dropdown.

## What these settings do not change

* **[Admin controls](/mcp/manage/security) still apply.** These are your personal settings for how your agent acts. Account-level app and action restrictions set by an admin are enforced separately.
