# MCP tools work once but fail on the next try

> Fix Zapier MCP tools that succeed on the first call but fail on subsequent attempts in the same conversation.

When a Zapier MCP tool works on the first try but fails on subsequent attempts in the same chat, your AI client may be reusing stale information from earlier in the conversation. This article explains how to reset the connection.

## Symptom

A tool works the first time you use it, but fails on the next try in the same chat.

## Causes

* Your AI client is reusing outdated authentication context from earlier in the conversation.
* Your AI client cached tool metadata at the start of the session and is not requesting fresh data.
* A transient error during the first call left the client in an inconsistent state.

## How to fix it

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a new conversation">
    Start a new conversation in your AI client.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Reconnect if the problem continues">
    If the problem continues, disconnect and reconnect to the server from inside your AI client.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check your server dashboard">
    Go to the [Zapier MCP dashboard](https://mcp.zapier.com/) to confirm the tool is still listed on the **Configure** tab and no warning indicators appear next to the app connection.
  </Step>
</Steps>
