# Using stored actions

> Save reusable action definitions and run them later through the Actions API.

Use **stored actions** when your product lets users configure an action once, save it, and run it later or repeatedly.

Stored actions are a better fit than direct action runs when you are building a production workflow builder, agent builder, or automation experience where users expect saved action configuration to persist in your product.

## When to use stored actions

Use direct action runs when your product builds the full action request at runtime and does not need to save the action definition.

Use stored actions when your product needs to:

* save a reusable action definition
* update or delete that saved action later
* run the saved action multiple times
* separate action setup from action execution

## How stored actions work

1. Create a stored action with `POST /actions/v1/stored-actions`.
2. Store the returned stored action `id` in your product.
3. Run the stored action with `POST /actions/v1/stored-actions/{stored_action_id}/run`.
4. Include a `callback_url` when you run the stored action so Zapier can send the result to your app when the run completes.
5. Use `GET /actions/v1/stored-actions/{stored_action_id}/runs/{run_id}` only as a fallback for troubleshooting or missed callbacks.
