When a Zapier MCP tool works on the first try but fails on subsequent attempts in the same chat, your MCP client may be reusing stale information from earlier in the conversation. This article explains how to reset the connection.

Symptom

A tool works the first time you use it, but fails on the next try in the same chat.

Causes

  • Your MCP client is reusing outdated authentication context from earlier in the conversation.
  • Your MCP client cached tool metadata at the start of the session and is not requesting fresh data.
  • A transient error during the first call left the MCP client in an inconsistent state.

How to fix it

1

Start a new conversation

Start a new conversation in your MCP client.
2

Reconnect if the problem continues

If the problem continues, disconnect and reconnect to the server from inside your MCP client.
3

Check your server dashboard

Go to the Zapier MCP dashboard to confirm the tool is still listed on the Configure tab and no warning indicators appear next to the app connection.
